Topic: Community Block Parties, Cookouts, etc? Posted: February-08-2010 at 6:56pm |
Hi everyone! We relocated to CA from TN in September and are currently renting in MH (have an eye for buying later on, possibly, still getting to know the area). We have been warmly welcomed by our immediate neighbors but would like an opportunity to meet more residents of MH. Do community-wide events such as these ever take place in MH? It seems like the kind of community that would have events like these...we did see the Tea and Coffee Social posted in January, it just seemed more like an opporunity to meet local leaders as opposed to your neighbors...maybe not?
Thanks everyone!

There only thing close to an official Block Party is the Neighborhood Watch National Night out I think. As for meeting people in Mountain House, I found that to be failry easy. Depending on your interests there a good amount of things being built up in the community. Good examples being the Friday Night Pickup Games, the Sunday Afternoon Flag Football Games, and the Mother's Club. And of course there is also this forum.

i've found you have to take the initiative to start things if you want to see them happen. in questa, last year a few neighbors organized a village BBQ/potluck at the park. it was really nice and if i remember there was probably at least 30 people there. we do the same thing a couple times a year just in esplanade and usually get at least half a dozen neighbors. walking down the block to meet new neighbors only takes a few minutes :) although the cold doesn't really help right now. oh and i second the flag football suggestion too!!

We've organized bowling nights, a few picnics at Wicklund park, game night (at Jim's), volleyball games and other "open" activities. Some have been more successful than others.

Welcome to Mountain House!
The next major community events include the 5th Great Egg Hunt on March 27, the 3rd Community Wide Garage Sale (first week of May I think), Kite Festival in June and the Fourth of July Parade and Picnic on July 3rd. In addition, there is a very active Mothers Club and sports activities for adults and youth.

Oh both the Friday Night Pick-up Basketball Games, the adult basketball league, the youth flag football league and the Sunday Pick-up Flag Football Games are run by our nonprofit, Mountain House Flag Football, our website is www.mhflagfootball.com.

Don't mean to thread jack, so I'll probably start another thread too. But I had a question about 4th of July. Did someone pick up the 4th of July parade? I thought the Mother's Club was no longer going to be doing it? It's one of our favorite events here so I'm very interested in seeing it continue.

Welcome to MH
This is always the best place to watch to see what community events are happening. As Andy said the next big event is the Easter Egg Hunt. Also don't forget the Halloween Parade.
There is also a book club if you are interested.
Hope you enjoy your new home

Hi Kendra,
Do you have kids? There is a list on Wiki that has a huge list of stuff to do for kids on a google map.

Hi Andy!
Yes, I have two girls ages 11 and 18. My 11 year old is in at Wicklund and my 18 year old will be starting CSU in the fall. Thanks for pointing that wiki out...I also found a discussion on here where people were posting different family-friendly activities. I've been taking notes off of that post! A map would really be helpful though because we are so unfamiliar with the area. My 18 year old is suffering the most, I think, so I'm kind of looking for group activities I can steer her towards too. Right now she's stuck with me 24/7 so you can imagine how she must feel!
Thanks again to everyone for all the great ideas! I've already bookmarked the Mom's Club and will be looking more in to that later this week too...

BLOCK PARTY!!!!! What an awesome idea! The Missus and I are meeting cool new neighbors left and right and they're all within walking distance. I just had an idea for an intra-village "pub crawl..." Ok, gotta work on this...

We live in Altamont and actually talked with our neighbor the other day about doing a "block party." I'm pretty sure if it is arranged, people will attend.

BTW, Scitchr, we have not only a 19 month old, but a 17 YEAR old...who is pretty much bored on the weekends... We still bring him to school in San Jose so he doesn't really know anyone here...I wish I could give you suggestions on what to do. : (
