Topic: Lammersville vies for 9M in state funding Posted: February-04-2010 at 1:54pm |
Hansen said the money would be used to design the 16.2-acre Altamont
School. He guessed that construction could begin as early as 2011,
depending on state money and enrollment. http://www.tracypress.com/view/full_story/5778077/article-Lammersville-vies-for--9M-in-state-cash-to-build-a-school?instance=home_news_bullets

interesting that there is money for building schools when districts are struggling to keep teachers who would teach in those buildings....

Gotsheep;
The funding mechanism is completely different for school construction than it is for day to day operations. School construction money all comes from bonds. None of these funds can be used to retain teachers, or staff. The state money, and the money from the district, to build schools comes from the bonds sold locally, and by the state. The state bonds are also created specifically for school construction. This then prohibits those funds from being used for other means.

Is there really going to be enough enrollment to begin on Altamont in 2011 when Questa will be opening before then? Fantastic if true! But it seems hard to believe. Bob

The good news is that the district has continued to grow. This has helped tremendously in avoiding some of the massive cost cutting that other nearby districts have faced the last two years. Growth will also depend in home construction. If things continue on the upward tick we are seeing now, then 2011 is a reasonable possibility. But most of the factors for the timeframe to build Altamont will be out of the district's control (enrollment and state funding).
And remember, starting the school in 2011 won't mean opening that year. 2012 would be the earliest possible opening. However, once the appeal money comes in, planning can begin in earnest to have us ready to go when the time is right.

If not used for Altamont school-perhaps the money could be used for the new High school (if approved)?

The money from this appeal MUST be used for Altamont school. It is specifically for that project.
