On the first day of school we received a slip from the Bethany School Foundation asking if each family could donate $50 in leu of fundraisers and the next day our son (7th grader) brought home guess what - a fundraiser packet. We gave the $50 to the foundation and $40 to the teacher for classroom supplies. Unless we actually want something from any general school fundraisers we will not participate. We will support the smaller fundraisers where the proceeds go directly to the classroom. I agree it is better to give cash directly than to buy overpriced product where the school gets a %. Kinders should be exempt IMO.

Macy's is coming to Tracy. The opening day is October 16, which is also Macy's Shop for a Cause Event.  You can help your local Mountain House library by purchasing a coupon and raffle ticket good for that day. 
 
Tickets are only $5 and entitle you to a) 20% off sale, clearance and regularly priced items (all day), b) 10% off all sale, clearance, and regularly priced furniture, matteress, area rugs, etc., c) 25% off a single item, and d) a chance to win $500 Macy's gift card.  Tickets can be used online or instore.  
 
All proceeds go to the Mountain House Friends of the Library. Checks or cash accepted. Checks should be made out to Mountain House Friends of the Library.

If anyone is interested, we are running tonight at 8PM in Questa.  Meet by the basketball court.

The run will be from 30-60 minutes at about an 11:00 minute pace.  Though some will be a little faster, and others will be slower.  On the plus side, Questa is very well lit and completely open since there are so few houses :)

Do these things really work all that much better than just asking for donations?  You could donate 50 and the school gets 50.  Or you could buy 50 worth of junk and the school gets 10?

I think hard selling the kids at any age is ridiculous.  Especially at the youngest ages though.  Maybe I will just keep Callie home that day.

I have to agree.  While I appreciate that every concern that I have sent in to the CSD has been addressed and fixed, I often wonder when I am out walking why I can see things that need to be taken care of and the people who are getting paid to do that job let it slide right by.  Keeping the playgrounds and public areas in great shape should be a priority. 
 
On a similar vein - when yards deteriorate to the point that they have hip high weeds and grass and the owner/bank does not take care of it, can the CSD take care of the yard and put a lein in the property so that when it sells the bill is deducted at that time?  I know in places where we have lived in the past we got only 60 days to take care of infractions before the HOA (or community authority) stepped in to take care of it.
